Board Member
Jo Konrad started flying as a hang glider pilot in 1974, followed by flying a powered ultralight Pterodactyl Fledgling in 1982. A few years later, in 1994, Jo began giving flight instruction in paragliders and powered paragliders. All these flying experiences parallel his work in several different positions within the light aircraft industry.
Today, Jo is a flight instructor and maintenance inspector for all Ultralight categories. In Europe, an Ultralight is an aircraft very similar to modern Light-Sport Aircraft in the USA. Ultralights are widely used throughout Europe as general aviation aircraft are much more expensive to own and operate.
Since 1984, Jo has been chairman of the German Ultralight Association, abbreviated as DULV (Deutscher Ultraleichtflug Verband). This organization is a sanctioned representative of the German Ministry of Transport and functions to approve new Ultralight aircraft entering the German market. Jo Konrad was a member of the Committee for Light-Sport Aircraft regulation consulting to the German Ministry of Transport from 1991 to 1993.
He was a co-founder of the European Microlight Federation and served as General Secretary from 2003 to 2005. And he remains a member of the AOPA Germany advisory council.
Today, Jo works at the forefront of new European aviation regulations by serving as a member of the European Aviation and Safety Agency (EASA) Working Group called, ³A concept for better regulation in general aviation.² He is actively involved as EASA considers use of ASTM regulations in the European Union.
Jo Konrad was nominated to the LAMA board by past president, Tom Gunnarson, and was approved by other board members in 2007.
